You neglected to mention the brand of laptop. I assume it was a major brand and not something put together in someone's garage in town.

If a major brand it will have come with a warranty. Read the documentation and find out it's length and what it covers.

If still under warranty, contact the manufacturer direct for service under warranty. Not Geek Squad.

They just stole a 256 GB solid state hard drive from me. I sent it to them for repairs because it’s sadly the only way to claim the warranty when the motherboard went out.

When I got it back, the ssd had just “vanished”.

Idaho Falls swears that they mailed it to Kentucky for repairs, and Kentucky swears that no such hard drive arrived. One of them is lying.

OK, I can't tell if you paid them $400 and they couldn't find the problem or if you said no way and never paid them. Since you said you are out $800 I assume you paid them the $400 to fix it but this not very clear.

Also HP laptops like almost every major electrical appliance have a 1 year warranty, after that it is up to you to fix it and Best Buy, HP or whoever can charge whatever they like to fix it.

And perhaps next time shop around local computer repair shops for a better price. Either way the only reason this is Best Buy's problem is if they could absolutely not fix your problem and still charged you $400.
